Chapter Seven

“Ugh. We missed lunch. The diner is closed until three.” Ally glanced at the time on the car’s dashboard. That gave them about an hour and a half. But to do what? Their next possible lead was inside with Dara.

“What should we do while we wait? Go back to the tea shop?” Sidney voiced the questions in her head.

She shifted away from him in her seat, the horrid image of Mr. Henry surrounded by blood flashing through her head. She did not want to see what a frozen body looked like. “No way. I don’t want to sit inside sipping tea while we have Mr. Henry’s body in the freezer.”

“I’m getting a little claustrophobic sitting in the car.” His voice took on a slight edge of irritation as if he were running out of places to suggest. “Back to Amira’s house or yours?”

“I’m afraid a nosy neighbor will call the mayor and she’ll show up on the doorstep again.” Ally tugged at her lip and watched a few cars drive by them down the main street. A couple of kids ducked out of one of the stores on the square and an idea formed. She straightened and put the car in drive. “However, the elementary school is empty except for the crew working on the water pipes. They wouldn’t disturb us in my classroom.”

Out of the corner of her eye she could see him nod in agreement. “And,” he said, “we could maybe try to replicate the shock thing you did with your hands in the closet.”

“I hope you aren’t suggesting that I practice witchcraft during our downtime.”

“Why not? You should know what you’re able to do.” He cleared his throat. “It would be a shame if you accidently shocked one of your students because you don’t understand how your powers work.”

A pang of anxiety hit her in the solar plexus. She’d never willingly put any of her students at risk. She tightened her grip on the steering wheel as she made a turn. “Do they teach you that type of manipulation at the agency or is that something you’ve learned on your own?”

He chuckled. “I don’t see you as anyone who can be manipulated to do anything you don’t want to.”

Warmth spread up her neck. Sidney would have no way of knowing the effect of the compliment he’d just given her. As the middle Walker sister, she’d always thought the strengths belonged to her sisters. Amira the protector and Ris the bold and daring. Knowing her only a few short hours, he’d described her as if she possessed those qualities too.

She guided the car into the school’s parking lot and drove to the area designated for teachers. The building was L shaped and her classroom sat on the far end away from the white work trucks and utility workers repairing the pipes.

Being at the school brought a sense of calm she hadn’t felt since before Sidney had waltzed through the Tea Haven’s door. At the school and in her classroom, she controlled her environment.
